Finishing
A gate takes more weather than the fence it sits in, because it is exposed on both faces and all four edges. The end grain on the top and bottom rails is where water gets in, and it is the part most DIY finishes miss.
We seal the edges and end grain properly, remove the hardware rather than cutting around it, and rehang and adjust the gate afterward so it closes smoothly, just as it should.
