Monterey, California
Monterey is coastal, which means salt. Salt air finds every uncoated fastener, every cut end and every weld, and it is the reason metal fencing here fails from the hardware outward rather than from the panel in.
We specify hot dip galvanised or stainless fixings on coastal work as a default rather than an upgrade, and we seal cut ends on wood before the board goes up rather than after the fence is finished.
Wind exposure varies enormously street to street here depending on which way a property faces. We look at that on site rather than assuming, because the same fence that is fine on one side of a block will not last on the other.
