Morgan Hill, California
Morgan Hill has no page of its own on most fence company websites, which is odd given how much fencing work the town generates. The newer subdivisions east of Monterey Road have small flat yards and tight side returns, and the older properties toward the foothills have the space for something taller.
Morgan Hill is also the one jurisdiction in our area with a rule that changes what you actually build. Above 6 feet on a side or rear boundary, outside the front setback, the fence has to include a foot of lattice. A solid 7 foot board fence does not comply here even though it would in the county.
That is not a problem, it is a design decision. Board-on-board to 6 feet with a lattice foot above it is a better looking fence than a flat 7 foot wall anyway, and it lets light through to whatever is planted along the line.
Local rules
| Front yard | 3 ft |
|---|---|
| Side and rear | 7 ft |
| The rule | 7 feet is the maximum, and it is not permitted above that. |
Worth knowing. The detail that catches people: anything over 6 feet along a side or rear boundary outside the front setback has to include a foot of lattice. A solid 7 foot board fence does not comply. A 6 foot fence with a 1 foot lattice top does.
